I’m possibly the first African American artist to be internationally known. I used the support of abolitionist to gain work as a landscape painter in Cincinnati Ohio. I had no formal art education, but taught myself to paint by copying prints and engravings of European artworks. Although I may be best-known for his landscape painting, I was able to make a living by painting portraits.
