BAIA BITS: Gallerist Nicole Smith<\/b><\/p>\n

Little Moments Where Knowledge Meets Art<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n

\"\"In 1971, Nicole Smith was a curator at the Centre d\u2019art in her native Port-au Prince, Haiti. In search of new adventures, Smith moved to the United States in 1973 where she sold Haitian artwork from her home and the trunk of her automobile.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thirteen years later, in 1986, Smith stopped peddling art from her house and car. That\u2019s because she opened the Nicole Gallery in Chicago, providing a timely and much needed platform for Haitian, African-American, and African artists. She would continue to do so for more than three decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Along with representing the works of the African Diaspora, the Nicole Gallery shed a particular light on the Shona stone sculptures and artistic traditions of the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe. It was one of the first American galleries to do so as Smith played a significant role in popularizing Shona art, bringing one of the most comprehensive collections of Shona sculpture to the United States. Through such collections, the Nicole Gallery was soon recognized as one of the finest galleries in the world devoted to Diasporic art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Smith was also instrumental in fueling and guiding the careers of many of the artists she showcased in her gallery, representing them as well. Among them were such Chicago-based artists as Allen Stringfellow and George Carter, Haitian artist Franck Louissaint, and Nigerian artist N\u2019Namdi Okonkwo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Smith\u2019s own popularity grew along with her gallery. In 2002, Chicago Gallery News featured her on its cover. In 2010, Smith was named a Chicago Defender Woman of Excellence. That same year, Smith put on a well-received fundraiser at the Nicole Gallery to benefit artists displaced from her old facility, the Centre d\u2019Art, in the wake of the catastrophic earthquake that hit Haiti.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On March 29, 2016, after transforming both Chicago and the art world with her wider representation of Diasporic art, Nicole Smith joined the ancestors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Stephanie Robinson, Esq.<\/strong> is a Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, a national media figure, author, former Chief Counsel to Senator Edward M. Kennedy, and former President and CEO of The Jamestown Project, a national think tank focusing on democracy. Ms. Robinson hosted her own national radio show, Roundtable with Stephanie Robinson<\/em>, a popular weekly 30-minute, talk-radio program focused on culture, politics, and relationships that aired on TSN. For over half a decade, Ms. Robinson was Political and Social Commentator for the Tom Joyner Morning Show<\/em> where she spoke to between 9 and 10 million people weekly, offering her perspective on the day\u2019s most pressing social and political issues.<\/p>\n

Robinson is co-author of Accountable: Making America as Good as Its Promise<\/u>, (Atria Books, 2009). She is a nationally recognized expert on issues relating to social policy, women, race, family, and electoral politics. She was featured as one of the 30 Young Leaders of the Future in Ebony Magazine and was profiled in the book As I Am: Young African American Women in a Critical Age<\/u>, by Julian Okwu. Robinson is a frequent speaker expressing her views in countless media outlets including the Associated Press, The Washington Post, C-Span, Fox News, NewsOne <\/em>and NPR<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Stephanie was a Member of President Clinton\u2019s first Mission to Africa regarding children orphaned by AIDS. Robinson, a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Maryland and the Harvard Law School, is a native of Steubenville, Ohio. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband and two sons.<\/p>\n
