A city landmark for eight decades, and an official Chicago Historic Landmark since June 1994, the center<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">touts a rich legacy, one directly tied to the plight of African American residents of Chicago\u2019s famous Bronzeville neighborhood and surrounding communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon American involvement in World War I, the Great Migration was launched and, by 1919, some one million African Americans had left the South<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">industrializing, labor-thirsty areas in the North and Midwest given the country\u2019s wartime curbing of European immigration. African Americans in rapidly growing cities like Chicago faced a host of daunting challenges including racism, segregation, overcrowded tenements, housing discrimination, and a wave of race riots. In this tense environment, the need for cultural outlets was never more prominent as south side communities began envisioning an artistic hub that would forever change the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8186\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sscartcenter.org\/home.html\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8186\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8186 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/media-archive.blackartinamerica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/charles-white-south-side-community-art-center.jpg?resize=629%2C392\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"392\" data-id=\"8186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/earthexhibitions.org\/media-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/charles-white-south-side-community-art-center.jpg?w=629&amp;ssl=1 629w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/earthexhibitions.org\/media-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/charles-white-south-side-community-art-center.jpg?resize=300%2C187&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8186\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charles White at South Side Community Art Center<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the mid-1930s, still reeling from the impact of the Great Depression, several artists and activists, including Dr. Margaret Taylor Burroughs,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advocated for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an art center to serve the South Side community. Buoyed by the 1935 establishment of the Works Progress Administration and their Federal Art Project\u2014and by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt\u2019s championing of this New Deal initiative\u2014funds were raised for a potential location through pledge drives,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organizational sponsorships, art exhibitions, and other activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sscartcenter.org\/home.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8189 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/media-archive.blackartinamerica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/sscac.jpg?resize=349%2C463\" alt=\"\" width=\"349\" height=\"463\" data-id=\"8189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/earthexhibitions.org\/media-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/sscac.jpg?w=349&amp;ssl=1 349w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/earthexhibitions.org\/media-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/sscac.jpg?resize=226%2C300&amp;ssl=1 226w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>These efforts would pay off and, in 1941, the South Side Community Art Center opened in a three-and-a-half story, classical revival style home at<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3831 South Michigan Avenue.\u00a0 The May 7 opening ceremony<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was covered by all major local and national media and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the dedication speech was delivered by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
