Honor and Dignity explores the four decade-long career of documentary photographer Jamel Shabazz in nearly 60 lesser-known images carefully selected by the artist. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Shabazz began photographing at the age of 15 to document his peers. As his practice continues 40 years later, Shabazz bears witness to the evolution of his community with a goal to “contribute to the preservation of world history and culture.” Like Gordon Parks, he prioritizes portraying his subjects with honor and dignity. In 2018, Shabazz received the Gordon Parks Foundation Award for his commitment to the arts in ways that reflect Parks’ ideas and goals by using creative means to inspire the next generation.
