The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture serves as a continued legacy after the passing of Reginald F. Lewis in 1993. As one of the richest African-American men in the 1980s, Lewis “accomplished more in half a century than most of us could ever deem imaginable,” his long-time friend David N. Dinkins read at his funeral. Lewis’s wish to support a museum of African-American culture was brought to fruition after the foundation granted $5 million to the creation of the museum.<\/p>\r\n

Referring to themselves as “the authentic voice of Maryland African American History and Culture,” The Reginald F. Lewis Museum stands as another griot, telling stories through art collections, exhibitions, education, and public events. Since 2005, the museum has housed about 10,000 artifacts in its temporary exhibition space and honored and demonstrated the history of black folk in Maryland in its two-story theater and museum spaces. Understanding that the children will carry the torch, the museum partners with the Maryland State Department of Education to provide educational programs to adults and children in their classrooms with their own curriculum. They even have meeting rooms and an outdoor terrace that can be rented for special occasions.<\/p>\r\n
