By D. Amari Jackson

This week, we reach into the b.a.SKET and pull out an historic meeting between two extraordinary African American women…

In 1944, amidst racial violence, segregation, and a global conflict between the world’s most powerful nations, one remarkable portrait would bring together two extraordinary African American women.

The first was internationally acclaimed contralto, Marian Anderson, who, a decade earlier, had taken Europe by storm with her extraordinary operatic vocals. Upon returning to America, Anderson performed at several venues, further growing her reputation. Then, in 1939, an event occurred that would forever change the Philadelphia-born singer’s life and American history when the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)—a lineage-based organization for women directly descended from a person involved in the nation’s struggle for independence—banned her appearance at Constitution Hall because she was Black. As a result of this action, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned her DAR membership in protest and facilitated Anderson’s Easter outdoor concert at the Lincoln Memorial, an event broadcast to a radio audience of millions. Anderson would go on to become the first African American to sing an important role with the Metropolitan Opera.

The second was Laura Wheeler Waring, a Hartford, Connecticut-born artist and educator who was commissioned by the Harmon Foundation to do a portrait of Anderson five years after her Lincoln Memorial appearance. Wheeler—who had also travelled Europe as a prodigy, yet in visual art—produced a stunning portrait of Anderson that, along with relevant educational materials, toured the nation for over a decade, serving as a visual rebuke of racism and inequity.

The portrait also serves as a testament to how two extraordinary African American female artists came together in an era of war to forge an image of dignity that a nation could no longer turn its back on.
