The Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery (MAAHMG) understands the importance of uplifting the names of those from your own community, teaching your own history, and keeping our age-old West African traditions alive.

MAAHMG was founded in 2018 to simultaneously celebrate and continue the legacy of Black folk in Minnesota through art, programs and events. These exhibits and programs aren’t just educational, they’re free too. While learning about the history, culture, and art of Black folk in the state, visitors are encouraged to dig into the value of connecting with each other. Visiting a museum on a particular day and time is a unique experience, and the people sharing that moment with you is also defining. Why not connect? Why not create dialogue around what you’re seeing and feeling?

What stands out about the museum, other than their unwavering efforts to uplift the natives of the land, is their"" representation of humility and strength through their logo of the West African Andinkra symbol, Dwennimmen. According to MAAHMG, they chose this symbol because it represents African American’s long historical display of grace, humility, perseverance, and strength despite the longstanding abuse they’ve been through.

The Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery stands as a true Griot, offering storytelling to children with books that highlight notable African Americans. As a part of the Children’s Reading Circle, MAAHMG continues its charitable efforts by offering free art classes, open mic nights, and free virtual artists talks and panel discussions around topics like:
