Black Art in America Congratulates Downs on Recent TV Acquisition

BLACK ART IN AMERICA™ (BAIA), the leading online portal and network focused on African American Art in the nation, congratulates artist, Downs, on the acquisition of his work by the popular television series, New Amsterdam.

Downs’ painting, Conversations In The Abstract #102, was recently targeted by the hit medical drama for an upcoming episode.

Influenced by such mentors as Karl Benjamin and Frederick Hammersley, Downs recognizes the importance and responsibility of being true to one’s own vision. “By speaking clearly in a non-object idiom, the goal is to make art that reflects modern day life,” reveals Downs, noting his “process consists of layering spontaneous random marks that are sometimes completely obscured. By working and reworking surfaces, I expose the varying depth of color which creates spaces that expand and contract, communicating the work’s shifting moods.”

His current series “Conversations In The Abstract,” arose from a stroke Downs experienced in 2015, changing his perception of life as an artist. The stroke brought on strange and unusual conversations in his mind, which he can only describe as abstract. The task, as he sees it, is to translate these thoughts into painting, to convey the aesthetics of his experiences in a positive manner.

Downs has painted professionally for over 40 years, exhibiting domestically and abroad. His work has been included in group shows with such noted artists as Andre Miripolsky, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Karl Benjamin. Downs’ works are included in private collections throughout the world.

The New Amsterdam television series, which airs on NBC on Tuesday nights, is based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer.

BAIA proudly congratulates Downs on his recent acquisition and inspired art.
