This week’s theme at the FIVE Spot is DANCING WITH KATHERINE as we present five works of art in celebration of the birthday week of the one and only Katherine Dunham! Born on June 22 in Illinois, Dunham was not only one of the most successful and influential African-American dancers on earth, she was a choreographer, anthropologist, educator, author, dance company owner, and activist. The creator of “the Dunham Technique,” she merged elements of African and Caribbean culture with European-style ballet in polyrhythmic dance styles with continuous motion. Along with her prominent theatrical career, Dunham was a pioneer in the field of dance anthropology and spawned numerous institutions in an extraordinary life that spanned a century.

Accordingly, these five works of art represent Dunham’s lifelong passion for dance and performance. They include Dancers by Allen Stringfellow; Praise Dancer by Debra Hand; Dancing With The Ancestors by Lawrence Terry; Urban Dance by Steve Prince; and Step One by Diana Shannon Young.

We encourage you to take at least five minutes to view them, study them, and connect with them.
