This week’s theme at the FIVE Spot is Jammin’ with Duke, as we present five works of art connected by instrumentation in honor of the April 29th birthday of the iconic jazz composer and bandleader, Duke Ellington. Before we march into May, the least we can do is offer a visual jam session in homage to the Washington D.C.-born pioneer of big-band jazz whose extraordinary musical career spanned more than half a century.
Accordingly, these five works of art celebrate a number of the instruments that Ellington so deftly directed and synchronized to produce his unique big-band sound. Masterfully rendered by five emerging and established artists, they include “Jazz Vibe” by Yesrod; “The Sound of Black History” by Najjar Abdul Musawwir; “Soul Serenade” by Steve Prince; “Lil bit of Jazz” by Najee Dorsey; and “Jammin for New Orleans 2” by Robin Holder.
