This week’s theme at the FIVE Spot is ARTISTS & CELEBRITY COLLECTORS, as we present five works of art connected by their creator’s appeal to an art-savvy celebrity. Prominent African Americans in the fields of film, TV, music, sports, literature, and politics have long supported emerging and established Black artists, similar to the artistically inspired relationship of James Baldwin and Beauford Delaney. Though collecting art is by no means just a practice for the privileged as almost anyone can begin collecting, a whOOOle lotta disposable income certainly doesn’t hurt! Among such artistically inclined celebrities are the late Maya Angelou, Grant Hill, Sean Combs, John Legend, and power couple Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean and Alicia Keys of the Dean Collection. 

Consistently, each of these five pieces was created by an artist whose work has been collected by one of these celebrity figures. The rendering artists include John Biggers (Maya Angelou), Elizabeth Catlett (Grant Hill), Kerry James Marshall (Sean Combs), Charly Palmer (John Legend), and Toyin Ojih Odutola (the Dean Collection). 

We encourage you to take at least five minutes to view them, study them, and connect with them.
