The FIVE Spot
Connecting through Art
Five works of art. One theme. The FIVE Spot.
This week’s theme at the FIVE Spot is the strength of Black women as we present five works of art connected by images highlighting the individual power, determination, and grace of the Black woman. These inspiring works capture this divine Black feminine power in multiple forms, be it in celebration of self; in a clear-eyed, determined gaze; in working the land; in a stylish, unapologetic, speak-my-mind demeanor; and in the power of prayer. Each piece depicts the indomitable spirit of Black womanhood as represented by the poignant images staring back at us, studying us, and challenging us to see their strength, a strength that has birthed us, nurtured us, inspired us, taught us, supported us, led us, and loved us.
These five works of art feature compelling images ranging from the bold, iconic writer and anthropologist, Zora Neale Hurston, to the lesser known, pioneering actress who died far too young, Diana Sands. The rendering artists include Deborah Shedrick, Phyllis Sandock, Elizabeth Catlett, Najee Dorsey, and Lisa Cain.
We encourage you to take at least five minutes to view them, study them, and connect with them.
That way, you can see which ones hit the spot.
