May 22nd, Brooklyn, NY: A Rip in the Tide, a solo show of hand-cut paper by Sophie C’est La Vie, will open at Lucas Lucas in Brooklyn on June 14th and will be on view through July 15th.
Through framed pieces of hand-cut paper as a reflection of a thought, mood or feeling at one point in time, the artist explores the collision of poise and primal response. She chooses to create natural and whimsical motifs using razor-sharp precision as a means of dissection.
An attraction to the simplicity of paper and the intricacies that can be created from it brought an interest to explore creating dynamic artwork of paper. Through this method, the artist transfers images of innocent and raw beauty into visual allegories balanced with softness and occasional subtle darkness. With each piece she hopes to engage the viewer to explore the simplicity of the medium while seeing the depths of the larger story within the cuts.
This delicate and tense play on duality aligns with the gallery’s offering to the experiencer a path where the light and the dark intersect, with hope and subsequent creation being the intended takeaway.
Says the Artist:
A Rip in the Tide is a collection of pieces that represent the reflection of the untamed wild undertones that are present in raw emotion. Through action and in silence, emotions bring out the deepest parts of our beings that we may not necessarily even imagine exposing. The images depicted show the juxtaposition between the primal and the poised, a metaphor of the illusion of being in control. Emotions unrolled, sometimes sudden and intense, like a rip in the tide.

About Sophie C’est La Vie:
Sophie C’est la Vie is a tattooer and artist based out of New York City. Pulling from organic references as well as hints of whimsical satire, her current work engages the individual and inspires them to look deeper into the subject matter to see more than what immediately meets the eye.
Working as a tattooer for 10 years, Sophie has spent a decade being drawn to botanical and decorative themes that have been reflected in her tattooing. Other personal interests that have influenced Sophie’s work include oriental patterning and art, animalia, vintage and antique objects with their high crafted and ornate detailing, the cosmos and the occult. A native Texan, Sophie currently resides and works as an artist and tattooer in Brooklyn, New York, tattooing at Saved.
About Lucas Lucas:
An all-inclusive gallery and concept space grounded in social impact, Lucas Lucas rotates dynamic works by emerging and contemporary artists, as well as rare jewelry and object. The gallery opened at the end of October in 2017 by Stacie Lucas and is in constant transformation; the retail-level gallery morphs to accommodate installation, wellness practice, live music, community gatherings and production.
