Veteran, folk artist depicts Louisiana life in Black History Month exhibition

See what 70 years of life look like through the eyes of folk artist Wendell R. Wilson.  “A Visual Journey through History, the Culture and the Traditions of Louisiana’s African American Veterans” exhibition will run Feb. 1-28 at Southern University Museum of Art – Shreveport. The Black History Month exhibition will feature works created by Wilson — a Louisiana-native, Southern University alumnus and U.S. Army veteran.

Museum guests will be able to explore the depths of humanity, gain a new perspective on everyday life and commemorate some of the hard-fought battles of mankind as portrayed by the 71-year-old artist.

“Now more than ever the lived experiences of African Americans, African American artists and military are vital to our cultural, economic, social, spiritual aspects to our existence,” said museum coordinator Angelique Feaster-Evans. “It’s important to keep those stories alive not only for ourselves and our posterity but to explore the common ground of humanity.”

The opening reception will be 5- 8 p.m. Feb. 7 at the museum. It will be a featured stop on the Shreveport Downtown Development’s Artwalk tour.
