Mahogany Black Arts and Cultural Center, Inc.

One of BAIA Foundation’s 2022 initiatives is instituting marketing assistance for African American Museums and Cultural Centers.

The Mahogany Black Arts and Cultural Center, Inc. is a nonprofit organization in Racine, Wisconsin that preserves and brings awareness to Black history, art, and culture in Racine County. The organization was founded just last year in 2021, and has since been on a mission to expand their temporary gallery space to a larger facility that will exist as more than just a museum. MBACC’s hope is to provide visitors with a unique, creative lens to better understand the Black experience.

The imagined new MBACC facility will highlight how Black Americans have felt through their experiences and existed in life since those experiences. The cultural center hopes to bring more awareness and inspire greater understanding and respect for the Black natives of Racine County.

Mahogany Gallery, where MBACC currently exists, upholds the notion that art is freedom, and that this freedom that has long been sought after by Black Americans, is protected and encouraged within the gallery. The Mahogany Gallery is a place for visitors to learn, connect, be entertained, and be inspired. Within the gallery, visitors can learn about contributions of Black Americans throughout history through educational videos, gallery showings, the community garden, and various programs and events that honor those of the African Diaspora.

Currently, at the MBACC and Mahogany Gallery, visitors can view the Juneteenth 2022: A RETROSPECTIVE FEATURE’S DETROIT DIGITAL COLLAGE ARTIST, JAMES CHARLES MORRIS exhibit. Soon, the Romare’s Garden Uptown Oasis will be available to the public in the MBACC’s Romare Garden, which is the gallery’s newest ongoing project.

Just recently, they achieved their first big haul of removing garbage, weeds, bushes, and vines to clear way for the mural to be painted. This garden will feature murals that honor Romare Bearden by capturing his artistic style among the garden oasis where live music and outdoor events will take place.

MBACC will host a plant and paint party on August 6, 2022 to continue building their project and making the garden oasis a reality.

THE BLACK ART IN AMERICA (BAIA) FOUNDATION is a 501c3 organization that applies what we’ve learned over our 12 years as a multifaceted arts company to facilitate the growth of artists while cultivating the relationships and opportunities that bring Black artists and communities together.

We invite you to become a monthly supporter of the BAIA Foundation. Starting at just $3 a month, YOU become a stakeholder and begin to help us transform lives through art. We are growing the BAIA team and will use your contributions to hire more team members for the purpose of creating more educational and marketing resources for schools and universities about african american artists both past and present. Such art initiatives and educational programming like Blacklite with Steve Prince, Relating to Art with Dr. Kelli Morgan, and BAIA BITS would not be possible without the ongoing support of our Patreon members.
