Christina Cultural Arts Center

One of BAIA Foundation’s 2022 initiatives is instituting marketing assistance for African American Museums and Cultural Centers. 

Located in Wilmington, Delaware, the Christina Cultural Arts Center focuses its service and purpose on the youth, functioning as the only comprehensive arts and education program in the state. CCAC strives to “change the trajectory of a child’s life by making affordable arts, education, career pathways, gallery exhibitions and live performances accessible to all.” Their mission is fulfilled through music, dance, art instruction, and literacy while encouraging diversity and supporting all ethnicities and lifestyles. 

Founded in 1945 by the Women’s Club of Trinity Episcopal Church, the Christina Cultural Arts Center’s original purpose was to provide activities for hard working Swedish and Polish immigrants. In 1969, their purpose evolved to preserve African-American culture and heritage through community-based arts. After renovating its building in 1993, CCAC has since stood as a prominent gathering place for youth and adults who want to develop the skills for a professional career in the creative arts. The center supports those curious about their cultural background and their unique creative expression in honoring and preserving their history. 

The Christina Cultural Arts Center offers several programs that have uplifted over 2200 students annually in expressing their passion for learning, maintaining physical and emotional well-being, and developing an understanding and sense of community and economic empowerment.

VOICE is their signature program that serves to provide teens with a platform on YouTube to express, create, commune and develop a professional career in the areas of Animation, Spoken Word, Drama & Playwriting, Graphic Art, and Audio/Visual Production. Heart Under the Hoodie, another signature program, serves as a violence prevention initiative to bring awareness and solution through evidenced-based, interactive drama school curriculum, in which students learn art, emotional intelligence, mindfulness, self-control, and positive social interaction.

Class subjects include:

  • acrobatics
  • African dance
  • ballet and jazz introduction
  • brass and woodwinds
  • drama
  • drumline
  • early childhood movement
  • guitar
  • percussion
  • piano
  • tap
  • voice
  • etc.

At CCAC,  learners of all ages are able to safely express themselves while building partnerships in the field of art and applying that artistic expression in other areas of their life. Environments like this make a world of difference for young and aspiring artists of all backgrounds. While it’s a place to release energy and express yourself in the most vivid way possible, it also makes room for you to dream, dream bigger, and rewrite the narrative. It’s a game-changer.
