Houston Museum of African American Culture

One of BAIA Foundation’s 2022 initiatives is instituting marketing assistance for African American Museums and Cultural Centers.

The Houston Museum of African American Culture invites all people, regardless of race or background, to join them in inspiring children’s education through the discovery of African American culture. The museum uplifts and honors the history and culture not only of Houston and Texas natives, but the entire Southwest along with the African Diaspora. HMAAC is passionate about leading current and future generations to explore and share past and current experiences of African Americans to ultimately foster community and keep the culture alive. It’s the only way, right?

Houston’s Museum of African American Culture is the sister institution to the African American Library at the Gregory School, located in the historic Freedman’s Town. Established in 2000, Mayor Lee P. Brown organized the Houston Museum of African American Culture to preserve the history of African Americans in Houston, and to uplift contemporary African American culture and art. The Houston Museum of African American Culture serves the latter, and does so through tours, art exhibitions, films, public discussions, and their Culture Shoppe, which features various forms of art and culture that allows visitors to uniquely express themselves and begin their journey as an art collector.

A beautifully renovated museum that houses two floors of gallery space, HMAAC showcases exhibitions that give you something to talk about—in the moment and later on. Conversations about history, about politics, Black culture, and so much more. One of it’s upcoming exhibits, The Bastards of the Diaspora, will run from April 16th-June 15th. It’s curated by Lise Ragbir, a phenomenal writer and curator who was born and raised in Montreal and currently lives in Austin.

When visiting the Houston Museum of African American Culture, you can schedule a tour for a group of 15 or more to explore the musuem’s exhibitions, which includes A Black Perspective, a group-organized exhibition centering prominent African-American artists’ works created between 1945 and 2015.

Can’t make it in person to visit the HMAAC? They’ve also got virtual exhibitions including the Latinx Museum of Art in Houston and Souls of Black FolkHMAAC provides a variety of material from their own art, film, and history archives, but also external sources to engage, provide discussion, and further the education of African American history and culture.

Don’t forget to sign up for the newsletter and make a donation, as much of its funding relies on community support. It takes a village, right?
