The Najee & Seteria Dorsey Collection at Black Art In America consists of over 400 works in various mediums and genres by both legacy and leading contemporary artists.

The saying goes that “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” It is a proverb that promotes the notion that it is better to be content with what you have for certain than risk losing it by trying to get something potentially better. For example, if today, on the spot, someone offered you an artwork by talented 20^th century artist, Frederick D. Jones, for a decent price, it would be better, according to this line of thinking, to secure it now rather than hope for or assume his works will be available for less on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

It’s a point well taken given Jones’ art is not something one should pass up as it beautifully juxtaposes harsh reality with representations of hope within the same image. From this perspective, a barren tree could represent a cold, harsh, winter-like reality. Simultaneously, and despite such a stark or oppressive backdrop be it socially or religiously imposed, a subject can still choose hope, beauty, and a potential opportunity for freedom as represented by the gentle fondle of a vibrant and colorful bird in hand.

Consistently, these are the colors of life—red for the blood that courses through our veins like our passions; yellow for the beautiful, warming light of day; and green for vibrance and for life itself, even in the most barren of places.

Indeed, like a beautiful bird that sustains you with its message of hope, the extraordinary work of Frederick D. Jones is well worth getting your hands on today.
