The Three-Piece: Lonnie Powell

Artists by the Numbers

Three works of art. Two minutes each. One artist.

3… Three works. Straight outta the collections of Black Art In America comes three compelling pieces of art for this week, including SaadCecilia’s Back, and Harriett.

2… Two minutes. We encourage you to take at least two minutes to view each of these works, study them, and connect with them. See which ones speak to you, challenge you, and-or inspire you.

1… One artist. The artist behind today’s works is Lonnie Powell, a multimedia painter and community organizer. Powell is a graduate of Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Missouri where he was privileged to study under the guidance of the late James Dallas Parks, who’s influence spread well beyond the sphere of art. Powell’s paintings and drawings are housed in the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art’s permanent collection, the Arrowhead Arts Collection, and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. His paintings depict portraits of African American men and women. In 2001, Powell founded the Light in the Other Room, a collaborative of African American artists.
