I have been collecting African American art for about as long as Mr. Brinson. I built my collection in a novel way: by buying art at mom and pop auction houses near where I live. I have amassed a collection based on what moved me and not necessarily as an investment. Just as important, I bought art so I could write about the artists, as well as give unknown artists – especially local artists who produced works because they were willed to do so – a presence on the web. I’ve written about these artists in my blog “Auction Finds,” myauctionfinds.com. I have independently published an ebook and paperback via Amazon Kindle about my collection, the story behind each acquisition and things I learned along the way. The book is titled “ART WITH HEART: How I Built a Sweet Collection by Buying Cheap at Auction.”
