It is clear from her response, when she received the sculpture from Artist Debra Hand, that she recognized her as another one of the “Ones” in the group to which only a select few dedicated artists can claim membership First recognized by our Venerable Queen Mother, Ancestor, Dr. Margaret T.G Burroughs , who ” took her from crayons to Museums” such as The Du Sable Museum and The Smithsonian Institutions, Artist Debra Hand continues to pay homage to those who were -and are -not only masters of their craft but, who also, commit their talents , platforms , and institutions to advance the cause of human and civil rights . It does , indeed, “take one to know one” and the “Ones” known by Artist Debra Hand ,and by whom she is known , are legendary.
Rest in Love, Queen Mother, Ciceiy Tyson. We are grateful to God for your gifts . And we are thankful to you for sharing them with us. Kudos to Artist Debra Hand for keeping the spotlight shining in the right direction as she follows in the footsteps of our Ancestor Queens.

The intimacy of your story and the touching glow of ancestry you invoke especially moved me. I feel so grateful to know these lesser-known facts about her life.

I’ve always loved her acting. Even with minor roles, as in Tyler Perry’s Madea movies, she brought a majesty and dignity that transcended the story.

I knew Paul Freeman because he is from Richmond Virginia, where I grew up. In fact, my father, Maurice Williams, was his music teacher at Armstrong High School, and nurtured Paul over the years. I remember music lessons at my house….Paul was a virtuoso clarinet player, one of my early roll models. My father considered the band Paul Freeman played in during the early 1950s to be one of his best.(maybe THE best….I have to admit, even though I came to his band a little later!)

One day when I was in Seattle, Washington, I took a ferry over to Vancouver. On board for my return to Seattle I looked back at the shore before the boat left and thought I recognized someone. It was Paul Freeman! I disembarked and ran over to him. We hugged in memory of Maurice Williams. History connects us so very often. That was the last time I saw him. Thank you for this connection with the Maestro and Cecily Tyson.
