He was my Art Teacher at Morris Brown College for 2 years. I was actually honored when he asked me to complete a couple murals with him during my time there; one made it to a national art magazine…Bless his lovely wife also, she is/ was a ray of light in his life…she was so cool and solid, while me and him were so out there/ free…Aww.. that was my dude.. RIP Professor Delsarte…

What a profound legacy he is for us. His work connected me to our ancestors in such an intimate and spirit filled way. Some gave me the softness of quilt work (“Gathering”, acrylic on canvas 2003). Or sent me dreaming in notes of Blues and Jazz (“Illusions of Grandeur”, graphite pencil 1987). He credited his mother for introducing him to art and encouraging him to draw. As a New York City girl, raised by the village of Harlem, I took great pride that his professional journey began in my sister village at Brooklyn College. Where he earned a certificate in Fine Arts Education in the mid 70’s. He would later earn his B.F.A. from Pratt Institute before moving on to earn his M.F.A from The University of Arizona and master studies at Hans Hoffman in Provincetown Mass. More than his connection to the village that raised me is his faith as he shared with me, “When I paint, I seek beauty in my work. For me, painting is a form of prayer and keeps me connected to God.” May flights of angels sing you to rest brother Delsarte. May your work forever lift us higher and remind us of the richness in our souls.

Delsarte will live on in the memories of many of us as a highly imaginative chronicler of what he witnessed during his sojourn in this world.
