Gene was too mature to take part in the traditional hazing that accompanied a pledge period, but his wisdom and character stayed with you for decades. Gene’s demeanor exhibited that of a southern gentleman even though he was from the midwest. His knowledge of fine art and black art was phenomenal, upon graduation I recall traveling to Houston and purchasing many pieces upon his recommendation. Unfortunately, I have not been able to restore my collection since hurricane Katrina. I will truly miss brother Phoney. May you soul rest in peace Gene.

Mere words are inadequate to describe my great friend, my brother, my mentor. Once I went to a dinner for the homeless in Houston with Eugene Best time I ever had. I will miss and always love my Brother. I am heartbroken. Rest in paradise Eugene.

Eugene was the best friend, associate, dealer, companion anyone could ever wish to have. I am truly honored to have been within his circle for over 4 decades. I am extremely blessed for him having passed my way. Ase’, my brother.

We both understood how much study was important to what we were doing in the business. We took it like a business not a hobby as it was for most. I will miss his counsel RIP dude see you on the other side
