In may ways we have lead parallel lives as artist who lived in Los Angeles, studied with Charles White, had galleries but not wanting to be known as galleries, we both work abstractly and have the deep south as a nurturing source.

Here is “why”: My 80 year old African American uncle was an artist in college in the 70’s. Born in the Midwest, he moved to LA in 1957 after being denied an interview with Hallmark cards. He had just graduated from college with a masters degree in art, when he proudly accepted and showed up for an interview as a designer for Hallmark Cards.
When he showed up the receptionist would not allow him past her desk.
My Uncle explained to me that this prompted him to move to California. But even in California, he found it difficult to earn a living as an artist and painter. Determined to monetize his artistic talent, he turned to the medium of graphic design to earn his living. Ultimately, he was able to return to his artistic roots as a Professor of Art at UCLA. My Uncle is no longer with us, but like Suzanne Jackson he has left a rich content of work that tells cultural stories from the unique perspective of this very talented, but disenfranchised artist. His name is Bill Brown., and he has left me his legacy of paintings, charcoal drawings, oils, acrylics, and ground breaking pieces of graphic design!
