It’s wonderful to walk into my home and see paintings and other items that reflect my heritage. I love the fact that it allowed my children to start seeing them so early in their lives. AND my books. Now that I am older and had to downsize, I really do see how much I collected.

One thing I would point out is that in the Aaron Douglass painting in your article you infer that the hairstyle isn’t traditional African. It is. Please look at images of Fante Gold Coast women. (1895). Traditional hairstyle. I could see why you’d think it isn’t as it could be depicted as a ‘straightened’ hot comb style.
