Comments on: “Is it Ethical to Sell a Gift of Artwork from an Artist Once They Make it Big?” by Debra Hand https://earthexhibitions.org/media-archive/?p=11896 Tue, 29 Mar 2022 17:43:12 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.0.6 By: Sylvie Meyers https://earthexhibitions.org/media-archive/?p=11896#comment-390 Tue, 29 Mar 2022 17:43:12 +0000 http://media-archive.blackartinamerica.com/?p=11896#comment-390 I found your article most interesting. Through the years, I was given several gifts from artists, and have treasured them since. They remind me of a special moment in a relationship, and I dont care if their value has increased.

Your article reminded me of the Vogel couple who, with modest means and their great eye accumulated an extensive art collection. They displayed it in their home. When they died the collection was given to a museum for all to enjoy. Many of these gifts were “sold” to them at either very low price, or given to them. There was a “gentleman’s understanding” of respect.
At times, people are so callous as to not appreciate how an artist can live with pain, anxiety, failure, being ignored and then, with luck, being recognized. If one does appreciate the artist’s work, they should hang on to it, out of affection and respect.
